Alibates Flint Quarries National Monument
Slated to close the National Park Service office in Fritch which serves both Lake Meredith National Recreation Area and Alibates Flint Quarries National Monument by August 31, 2025. If implemented, this closure could result in a sizeable reduction in staff, which means surrounding counties such as Hutchinson, Moore and Potter will have to respond to 911 calls which may be an issue during busy call volumes over the holidays and weekends when large crowds are at the lake.
Texas
Amistad National Recreation Area
Haven't found any online reference to cuts, but this location is subject to the overall NPS budget cuts.
Texas
Big Bend National Park
Staffing shortages, lost 5 employees in the Feb 2025 layoffs, which has resulted in concerns about reduced maintenance, slower emergency response times, potential park closures, and diminished educational programs at Big Bend.
Texas
Big Thicket National Preserve
Could lose federal protections, funding, and professional management that was set up and designed to preserve the natural, historical, and cultural resources for all Americans. This is one of the sites that could be transitioned to state government and budgets which often lack the same resources, expertise, and legal frameworks to provide the level of stewardship needed.
Texas
Blackwell School National Historic Site
Budget cuts could cause this location to close entirely if they do not have enough to support staff that is already very small. Currently only open on Sat and Sun. Superintendency is vacant and the hiring freeze prevents the from replacing this position.
Texas
Castner Range National Monument
Unchanged. Hasn't opened to the public yet.
Texas
Chamizal National Memorial
Haven't found any online reference to cuts, but this location is subject to the overall NPS budget cuts.
Texas
Fort Davis National Historic Site
Significant staffing shortages. The Superintendency is vacant and because of the hiring freeze they cannot replace this position. Online reviews suggest that there are fewer rangers available to interact with visitors and some buildings may be closed or have limited access, but the park remains open to the public.
Texas
Guadalupe Mountains National Park
Staffing shortages, otherwise unchanged.
Texas
Lake Meredith National Recreation Area
Slated to close the National Park Service office in Fritch which serves both Lake Meredith National Recreation Area and Alibates Flint Quarries National Monument by August 31, 2025. If implemented, this closure could result in a sizeable reduction in staff, which means surrounding counties such as Hutchinson, Moore and Potter will have to respond to 911 calls which may be an issue during busy call volumes over the holidays and weekends when large crowds are at the lake.
